Sugar alcohols such as erythritol, xylitol, and isomalt are used in many sugar-free foods and candies. The FDA recognizes that sugar alcohols do not promote tooth decay in the way traditional sugars do.

That's an important difference between a traditional sugary candy and a sugar-free treat like Zollipops.

What Happens in Your Mouth After You Eat?

 

Your mouth is constantly working to maintain a healthy oral environment.

After eating or drinking, the pH of your mouth can temporarily become more acidic. Saliva plays an important role in helping buffer acids and restore the mouth toward its normal environment.

Some research has also looked specifically at sugar-substitute lollipops and their effect on salivary pH. In a randomized study of children ages 3–6, a lollipop containing xylitol and erythritol was associated with an increase in salivary pH after consumption.

In an NIH-funded study on Zollipops, researchers observed:

  • A reduction in total oral bacteria

  • A reduction in S. mutans, a bacteria associated with oral health

  • No reported digestive issues these treats were well tolerated by kids

 

The Ingredients Behind Zollipops

Isomalt

Isomalt is a sugar alcohol used to provide sweetness and texture without traditional sugar. Like other sugar alcohols, it does not promote tooth decay in the way that fermentable sugars do.

 

Erythritol

Erythritol is another sugar alcohol used in Zolli products.

Research has investigated erythritol-containing candies and oral health. In a three-year randomized clinical trial involving 485 schoolchildren, children who consumed erythritol-containing candies had fewer dentin caries outcomes than children in the xylitol and sorbitol groups. Researchers also observed differences in plaque acids and mutans streptococci associated with the erythritol group.

A follow-up analysis found that several of the observed differences persisted for years after the intervention ended.

 

Xylitol

Some Zollipops formulations contain xylitol, and our Zolli Drops contain xylitol.

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol commonly used in sugar-free oral-care products and foods. Research has examined xylitol's effects on oral bacteria, saliva, and dental caries, including its use in sugar-substitute candies and lollipops.

Because not every Zolli product has the same formulation, check the package ingredient statement to determine whether a particular product contains xylitol.
